Description of the overall mission of this organization:
Central Falls School District's Expanded Learning Community (ELC) offers expanded learning programs to students in the elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school, in summer, afterschool, and other out-of-school time learning.  Our vision is to build the capacity of Central Falls youth to be leaders, innovators and problem-solvers in their schools, their communities and beyond. We strive towards our vision by providing student-centered expanded learning programs that accelerate student learning in literacy and STEAM while also supporting their social and emotional growth.
Ages of youth served: 2nd- 4th Graders
Hours of internship: (number of hours, days, times)
5 hours per week: M/W or T/TH 2:00-4:30PM
OR
10 hours per week: M-TH 2-4:30PM
Dates: October 5th to December 17th, with the possibility of continuing for remainder of school year.  Must be available for a brief orientation the week of September 28th.
Description of role and duties:
Interns are be responsible for assisting the school's Site Coordinator in the day-to-day activities of the Afterschool Program.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Work directly with students in second through fourth grade as a support staff during afterschool programs.
  • Assist program providers in facilitating program activities and engaging youth participants.
  • Assist in program set-up, distribution of snacks, clean-up after snacks, and clean-up at the end programs.
  • Provide assistance in directing student traffic during transition times and during the arrival/dismissal of youth participants.
  • Provide assistance duringmergency protocols & procedures.
  • Arrive promptly at 2:00pm and remain until program dismissal at 4:30pm.

Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
  • During program set-up and clean-up, interns work directly with site coordinator.
  • During program, interns work directly with one community provider or teacher and approximately 25 youth in either Ella Risk Elementary School or Veterans Memorial Elementary School in a classroom setting during afterschool hours.
  • Dress code is school appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
  • Required background check once hired
  • Capacity to serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth participants of the afterschool program
  • Desire to work with elementary youth in a positive atmosphere
  • Reliable transportation to designated school
Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in youth development and community-based programs
  • Previous experience working in a licensed childcare program or afterschool program
  • Previous experience writing/planning activities for STEM, arts, sports, and/or skill building
